Chemical Suncreens are out Natural is in .. but why and who do you trust?


Summer is here early we totally skipped spring and sunscreen is needed to protect our skin and our family's. But how do you choose a Sunscreen that is safe for you and your family? Here is some information to help you make an educated decision on which ever you choose. Sunscreen is a unique body care product: consumers are directed to apply a thick coat over large areas of the body and reapply frequently. Thus, ingredients in sunscreen should not be irritating or cause skin allergy, and should be able to withstand powerful UV radiation without losing their effectiveness or forming potentially harmful breakdown products. Sunscreens commonly include ingredients that act as “penetration enhancers” and help the product adhere to skin. As a result, many sunscreen chemicals are absorbed into the body and can be measured in blood, breast milk and urine samples. Yes you heard that right what you put on your skin can actually leech into your breastmilk and ultimatley into your babies food !!! Your skin is one of the biggest organs it will absorb anything you put on it. Active ingredients in sunscreens come in two forms, mineral and chemical filters. Each uses a different mechanism for protecting skin and maintaining stability in sunlight. The most common sunscreens on the market contain chemical filters. These products typically include a combination of two to six of these active ingredients: oxybenzone, avobenzone, octisalate, octocrylene, homosalate and octinoxate. Mineral sunscreens use zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide. Lab studies indicate that some chemical UV filters may mimic hormones ( think breast cancer in the future ) or cause skin allergies, which raises important questions about unintended effects on human health from frequent sunscreen application. The most worrisome is oxybenzone, added to nearly 70 percent of the non-mineral sunscreens in EWG’s 2016 sunscreen database. There have been multiple European studies regarding how many sunscreen chemicals were found in breast milk. “Experts” tell us that the benefits of Chemical sunscreen outway the risk and that more studies are needed to come to a conclusion on the hazards. Researchers from Denmark and Switzerland are discovering that oxybenzone, homosalae and octinoxate are disrupting hormones. More and more people are starting to get wind of the hazards of chemical sunscreen and going to a mineral based. Mineral based Sunscreens are made with zinc oxide and titanium dioxide generally score well in EWG’s ratings because: 1) they provide strong sun protection with fewer health concerns 2) they don’t break down in the sun. 3) Zinc oxide offers good protection from the UVA rays. Titanium less so, but better than most. EWG does a full report on sunscreens every year and provides a comprehensive list so you can make an educated purchase that best suits your needs.
